Petal First Approach

I know… That sounds like a lot to think about at once. But don't worry. I'll hold your hand through the very basics first. Then learn to paint 5 foundational shapes: daisy, tulip, poppy, hydrangea, and rose.

And for each one, we don't start with the whole flower. We start with a single petal. We practice the exact brush stroke a specific petal needs (the pressure, the release, the angle) over and over. Then you move to the full flower, and your hand already knows what to do.

Each stroke feels easier than you expected. And because you're not juggling everything at once, you start noticing the small things that affect your painting. By the time you finish the module, you've painted a real, beautiful flower, without the overwhelm of figuring everything out at the same time.

I call this the Petal First approach. It's the core of how I teach loose florals.

Module 1: Foundation

We start before the flowers. First, supplies: paper, paint, and brushes. Then we spend real time on basic techniques: brush and water control, and simple color theory to keep your colors fresh instead of muddy.

Module 2: Flowers by Shapes

Daisy · Tulip · Poppy · Hydrangea · Rose

The order we paint each flower shape is intentionally chosen. We start with a simpler star-shaped flower (daisy), move onto a more 3-dimensional bell-shaped flower (tulip), learn to let go with loose expressive flowers (poppy), then build clusters from tiny flowers (hydrangea), and finally end with spiral-shaped flower (rose) that requires a bit more technique. Each module follows the same Petal First approach starting from a petal practice.

Meet Your Instructor

I'm Jean Choe, a watercolor artist and designer in Northern California, and the founder of Jean Choe Art & Design.

I've taught in-person watercolor workshops for years, and my favorite part isn't the painting itself. It's watching someone get completely absorbed in their own corner of the page, then look up holding what they made with the proudest face. That moment never gets old.
