Meet Your Instructor
I'm Jean Choe, watercolor artist, designer, and founder of Jean Choe Art & Design, based in the Bay Area, California.
I've been teaching watercolor workshops for years, and what I love most isn't the painting itself — it's the moment I watch a student get completely absorbed in their own little corner of the page, and then look up and hold what they painted with the proudest face. I actually did that. That moment never gets old. (Honestly, it's the reason I keep teaching.)
My work lives in watercolor — florals and botanicals, nature, and the colors of everyday things — and I turn it into products people use and give as gifts: watercolor kits, workbooks, art prints, tea towels, and more. Teaching has always been part of that, and this course is the most complete version of everything I've learned about how to make loose florals feel approachable, step by step.

The Petal-First Method
Here's what makes this course different from tutorials you may have watched before.
For each flower, we don't start by painting the whole thing. We start with a single petal.
Before you paint a daisy, you practice the exact brush stroke a daisy petal needs — the pressure, the release, the angle. You do it a few times. Your hand gets familiar with it. Then, when you move to the full flower, something interesting happens: your hand already knows what to do.
You paint with more ease than you expected. The petals flow. And by the time you finish the module, you've painted a real, beautiful flower — without the overwhelm of trying to figure everything out at once.
This is how every module in the course is structured. One foundational stroke. Build from there. Finish with a flower you're proud of.
I call this the Petal-First Method — and it's the core of how I teach loose florals. It's why my in-person workshop students leave with paintings they want to frame, even on their very first try.

Module 1: Foundation
1.1 Introduction
Who this course is for, what you'll learn, and how to move through it so you get the most out of every lesson. Warm, clear, and sets you up to feel ready before you ever pick up a brush.
1.2 Supplies
Everything you need to get started — no overwhelm, no unnecessary extras. I show you the actual paints, brushes, paper, and palette setup I use and explain what to look for at different budgets.(Downloadable supply list included.)
1.3 Basic Techniques
Your foundation before flowers: how water and paint work together, how to use a brush, the difference between a wet and a dry surface, and basics of color mixing. This module is where the Petal-First Method starts making sense.
Module 2: Flowers by Shapes
Each module follows the same Petal-First structure: a brush warm-up drill starting from single strokes, a step-by-step flower demo, and a project to follow along. Foliage — leaves, stems, simple greenery — is woven into each module where it naturally belongs, so you're always learning it in context.
Star-Shaped Flowers
2.1 Daisy
Daisy, aster, coneflower. Simple radial petal stroke is the first one we practice along with how to paint flowers from various angles.
Cup-Shaped Flowers
2.2 Tulip
Tulip, magnolia, and crocus. Learn the brushstroke that forms their three-dimensional shape with minimal strokes.
Loose Expressive FLowers
2.3 Poppy
California poppy and field poppy. This module is about learning to let go — painting thin, crinkled petals with loose strokes and understanding when a flower is done.
Clustered Flowers
2.4 Hydrangea
Building volume from small, soft flower heads, and how to make color blend and shift softly across a cluster of flowers.
Spiral-Shaped Flowers
2.5 Rose
Rose, ranunculus, and peony. Wet-on-wet layering from the center out — with examples of mistakes beginners often make and how to fix them.
Module 3 - 4: Bouquet & Bonus Lessons
Composition
3. Mixed Flower Bouquet
Learn to paint a bouquet with various flowers and foliage. Great practice for composition — where to place your focal flower, how to fill in without crowding, and how to know when the bouquet is done.
